Historical notes about Montalcino
As many other medieval towns of Tuscany, during its history, Montalcino experienced periods of peace and prosperity. However, there was no lack of acts of violence, which have discontinued this atmosphere of serenity. Among the many episodes, important to remember are the struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines, the former were Papacy’s supporters, while the Ghibellines were Empire’s supporters, who fought over the lead of the town.
What to see in Montalcino
Inside the city wall, built in the 13th century, Montalcino includes attractive sights. The Duomo is one of the most important monuments of the town, which had been demolished in 1817 and totally rebuilt in Neoclassic style in 1834. Piazza del Popolo is the main city square, whereas the main building is Palazzo dei Priori, the City Hall, which includes a tall medieval tower.
